I got this idea from a song by Meanest Man Contest. Wanted to try doing pixellated/mosaiced color. It didn't turn out like I'd hoped, but was a fun experiment nonetheless. Did the figure colors on multiple separate layers, each mosaiced to a different size grid.
Dunno why the mid-air jumping; it's just what I pictured while hearing the song.
Original size 2600x4500 px and for some reason 288 MB. What.
Sorry for the watermark. :/
On repeat while CGing this: Santogold, "Shove It" Paul Devro, "Everywhere" (Fleetwood Mac/Gwen Stefani mashup) Subtle, "The Crow" The Aliens, "Ionas Look For Space" and of course, Meanest Man Contest, "Some People (Just Get Off On Breaking Hearts)"
Background is from the "sky stock" package from Ro-Stock here on dA.
this is absolutely...breath-taking. the background coupled with the figures and the text is beautiful and I love the mosaic-coloring. and their expressions. words can't even express my envy at your ability to evoke such amazing emotion D:
I can't even wrap my head around how amazing the coloring style on this is. Like it seriously blows me away. It looks like a pixelized watercolor. And you did it again with the cool sketchy ink work coupled with a totally incredible color job.
Your coloring is always top notch. I really like the mosaic effect in the background but once it hits the figures it makes them look like they're being censored, or that their identities are being protected for a newscast.
Great work, as usual, but I'd like to throw in my two yen if you don't mind..
I really like the mood you've presented with the mid-air free fall, and I feel you could add more to it by subduing the mosaic layer against the two of them via varying opacities. I'm not familiar with the song that inspired you to do this, but from an objective standpoint, the background lends itself to a soft feel and the full-on mosaic that accompanies both TJ and Amal feels pretty harsh against what feels dream-like otherwise.
On a more concise note, Amal's left forearm is kinda funky.
I've already said too much about what was probably just a fun doodle for you, so I'll just end this by saying that TJ looks awesome as always, from his dreads to his shorts. You have a knack for capturing what a likable, aloof character should be like.
Oh eek, you're right - I meant to fix that arm in Photoshop and just totally forgot. Will fix tomorrow. I'm ashamed to admit that forearms and elbows still confound me at certain angles.
If I try the mosaic-color thing again, I think it should be paired with really clean inks instead of my usual sketchiness...
What a fun looking picture!! The mosaic coloring idea is very interesting, and even though you weren't happy with the result, I think it's an excellent effort!
Wow, that's one of the most creative ideas I've seen yet. The coloring is really captivating (I just keep staring at it!) and I especially like the angle of TJ's legs, for some reason.
